Study: Housing Prices Affected By Agent Attractiveness

According to a new study, pricing in the housing market is now being affected by more than just the home, itself. Now, what your real estate agent looks like also helps to determine the price.

The results of the study were recently published in the journal Applied Financial Economics.

The research shows that even after adjusting for such factors as the location of the property, it’s size and it’s features, another surprising factor that came into play when determining price was the agent- specifically their race, gender and what they looked like.

Although the agent’s gender did not determine how long a home was on the market, the results showed that it did impact the price. When listing or selling agents were males, the prices were lower.

The study showed that homes sold for more when the agent was attractive, although they tended to remain on the market for longer periods. When salespeople are attractive, they typically earn between 10 and 15 percent more And overweight women earn significantly less than thinner ones.

The research also determined that race was a key factor, as well. The data showed that agents of color had longer market times and lower sales prices than their white counterparts.
