A Closer Look At Women’s Job Losses

President Obama

One key issue for the upcoming presidential race is unemployment. The numbers state that during the recession (which has been noted as the period from December 2007 to June 2009), the total number of jobs lost was just a little more than 5 million. Out of that number, 1.8 million were jobs held by women.

Statistically, there have been 2.2 million jobs added to the workforce since President Obama took office. However, only 284,000 of those went to women.

The numbers also show that approximately 9 percent of jobs held by women in the United States are in the teaching field. They also show that almost 23 percent of the jobs lost by women were from this field.

Teaching jobs are classified as being “local government”. That’s why one third of the women’s jobs lost were in local government. At the same time, another 51,000 federal female jobs were cut.

Date also shows that the year prior to President Obama taking office, the number of women’s jobs actually increased by 124,000, even though the economy was already in the midst of collapsing.

Government isn’t the only sector that has been affected. In less than four years, the number of public-sector jobs for men increased by 82,000 while those for women actually decreased by 243,000.

The good news is that business and professional service jobs for women have increased more than 400,000 since the end of the recession.
