Lack Of Role Models Blamed For Technology Gender Gap

Female symbol

The gender imbalance that plagues the technology industry is being blamed on one simple principle: a lack of female role models.

Today, as in years past, the top individuals identified within the technology industry continue to be men.

One ongoing problem is that the majority of interest in this field is being initiated by men. Out of all of the bachelor degrees that are earned, 60 percent go to women. But statistics show that when it comes to bachelor degrees in computer science, less than 1 in every 5 graduates are women.

Some companies are coming under fire for not having enough women in executive positions. For example, Facebook’s seven board of director positions are all held by men even though a majority of it’s users are female. But on the same note, their chief operating officer is a woman.

Executives have expressed an interesting in hiring more women into the technology industry, but can’t do so because of a lack of candidates.

But relying strictly on men could potentially harm a company. Some experts feel that the absence of women in the technology field could stifle a company’s creativity for developing products geared towards both genders.

Facebook has shown that if a company continues to run as a male-dominated executive company, they risk putting off potential female job candidates down the road.
