Obama Commencement Speech Targets Gender Gap

In a commencement speech recently delivered by President Obama, female graduates of Barnard College were told that more focus should be placed on the gender gap.

The President stated how women should continue to be involved and not sit back and watch. He also touched on his history concerning women’s rights and their issues and even spoke of the political stance his challenger, Mitt Romney had on the same subjects.

During his speech, the President also touched on his own personal experiences of having a single mother and a career-minded wife. He also commented on the importance of raising two daughters and how their lives will be impacted in a workforce that still has some boundaries when it comes to hiring women in certain positions. He specifically pointed out how more women were needed in corporate positions.

Women’s issues continue to be a hot topic across the nation following the President’s mandate on contraception, debate over the Paycheck Fairness Act and the ongoing controversy surrounding the Republicans and Planned Parenthood.

The latest fight between the parties involves separate and distinctive versions of the Violence Against Women Act.

Barnard College is familiar to the President since his sister, Maya Soetoro-Ng, was a 1993 graduate of the college.
