Study: Divorced Women Faring Better Than Divorced Men

Divorce

According to a new study conducted by the Pew Economic Mobility Project, divorced women are doing better financially than are divorced men. And the trend seems to be continuously improving.

This is a dramatic change from history which has always seen men coming out better financially than women.

Why are women suddenly doing better? There are several reasons. One, is because women are beginning to narrow the income gap between themselves and men. Another reason is due to the way that women are better managing their assets.

The study shows that over the past two decades, one-fifth of divorced women will see their income income increase by over 25 percent. That’s more than double the previous amount.

In comparison, only 16 percent of men see increases in income following a divorce.

The study also showed a trend in how income levels drop after a divorce. In the mid 1970s, the number of women and men who saw their income decline by at least 25 percent following a divorce was 63 percent and 30 percent, respectively. Today, those numbers are 49 percent and 47 percent.

The lower number, along with the lower percentage for women, is proof of the decrease in earnings gap between the genders.
