Women’s Tech Positions Lower For Second Straight Year

A new survey shows that women have seen a reduction in senior positions within the technology field for the second year in a row.

The survey was conducted by a division of Harvey Nash, the tech recruitment group based in Britain.

The results of the survey show that in 2010, 12 percent of chief information officers (CIOs) in the U.S. were female. In 2011, that number dropped to 11 percent. Last year, it went down again to just 9 percent.

But while women have earned top-level positions within such companies as Oracle, Xerox and Facebook, they have a much more difficult time garnishing these positions in the technology industry, which has a history of being male-dominated.

Within recent years, the tide seems to be changing as more and more women are earning those coveted positions and making a larger move in the technology market. Only a decade ago, women were scarce within technology CIO positions. Now, not only are more women stepping into these positions, but more women are starting up their own technology firms.

These results follow another recent survey conducted by Reuters which polled some 450 technology executives in the U.S. Almost one-third admitted that they had no women in their management positions. When asked if they felt that women were being underrepresented, almost one-half said no.
